Most customs delays start with paperwork. Check these before your cargo sails or flies.
Usually required
- Commercial invoice with full description, quantities, unit values and currency.
- Packing list matching the invoice: packages, weights and dimensions.
- Bill of lading (sea) or air waybill (air).
Often required
- Certificate of origin.
- Permits for controlled goods.
- Safety data sheet for chemicals and batteries.
Common mistakes
- Vague descriptions such as “parts” or “samples”.
- Weights that differ between invoice, packing list and transport document.
- Consignee details that do not match the importer of record.
