FCL or LCL: choosing the right sea freight option

How volume, budget and timing decide between a full container and a shared one.

10 October 2026

When you ship by sea you can book a whole container (FCL, full container load) or share one with other shippers (LCL, less than container load). The right choice depends on volume, budget and how quickly you need the goods.

When FCL makes sense

  • Your cargo fills most of a 20 ft container (about 25–28 cubic metres usable) or more.
  • You want the container sealed from origin to destination.
  • The goods are fragile or high value and you prefer less handling.

When LCL makes sense

  • You have a few pallets or cartons.
  • You ship regularly in small quantities.
  • You can allow a few extra days for consolidation and deconsolidation.

The crossover point

Many shippers start comparing FCL once LCL volume passes 13–15 cubic metres, but rates change by route and season. Send us your volume and we will price both.
